Aaron Pace The Founder’s Story of .LESS™

A Lightning-Bolt Vision Born from the Front Lines of the Internet

The idea for .LESS™ didn’t come from a boardroom or a whiteboard session.

It came from the front lines of the internet.

For years I worked as a Tier-3 Technical Engineer at a major telecommunications company, solving some of the most complex networking problems businesses and consumers faced. Every day I diagnosed LAN and WAN failures, ran live diagnostics, reset network infrastructure, and guided customers through detailed troubleshooting to bring their internet connections back online.

When the calls involved businesses, the stakes were even higher. I could picture customers standing in line while payment systems were frozen and revenue was literally walking out the door. Restoring connectivity required both technical precision and calm problem-solving under pressure.

At the end of nearly every call, I would ask the standard closing question:

“Is there anything else I can help you with today?”

The answer I heard again and again surprised me — and stuck with me.

People would often say:

“Yeah… can you help me get rid of all these annoying ads, pop-ups, spam emails, and junk online?”

Unfortunately, that was outside the scope of what I could fix as a network engineer.

But the frustration people felt about the internet experience stayed with me.

Millions of people rely on the web every day, yet the experience has become increasingly cluttered, intrusive, and inefficient. In the race to maximize advertising, many .COM websites began pushing more and more ads onto every page—until the experience itself became overwhelming, which is still the case today.

Around that time I was preparing for a career transition. After years tethered to a headset solving problems for others, I knew I wanted to build something bigger.

Then one afternoon, standing in my kitchen, the idea hit me like a lightning bolt.

A genuine “Aha!” moment.

I stopped in my tracks and said out loud:

“That's it!   I know exactly how to fix the internet!”

“.LESS”

Less of everything YOU don’t want online!

Less spam.
Less clutter.
Less intrusive advertising.
Less pop-ups.
Less junk.

Less expensive prices

Less expensive services

and more...

In that electrifying instant the entire vision unfolded in my mind — an entirely new internet namespace and ecosystem built around higher standards, where users finally win, businesses thrive without the noise, and the web becomes cleaner, faster, and more trustworthy.

That kitchen lightning bolt became the birth of .LESS™.

Building the Foundation

I went straight to work.

In 2010, I founded Advertising Standards Board Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with one clear mission: to establish and uphold higher standards for digital advertising and strong consumer protection across the entire .LESS™ ecosystem. (Note: This organization is only responsible for regulating and setting "advertising standards" for .less websites; it is not the "registry operator" or owner of the .LESS™ ecosystem.)

I designed it to function much like a community HOA — but for .LESS™ websites. We call it the WOA: or the Web Owners Association.

The WOA establishes clear rules and guidelines to ensure that every website within the .LESS™ namespace delivers less of what users dislike online — spam, intrusive ads, scams, and low-quality content — and more of what they value: speed, trust, and meaningful experiences.

The goal is simple: to ensure that every website operating under the .LESS™ umbrella remains clean, fast, trustworthy, and genuinely valuable for both consumers and businesses.

The philosophy behind the organization was simple and captured perfectly by this slogan I came up with:

“The Non-Profit Where YOU Benefit!™”

Unlike most nonprofits that serve a narrow cause, this mission was designed to benefit everyone who uses the internet.

I immersed myself in research on the global domain name system and internet governance. That journey led me to ICANN, the nonprofit responsible for coordinating the domain infrastructure that powers the internet. Most people are surprised to learn that there is actually an organization that runs the internet. Yes it true! ICANN plays a critical role in how the domain system operates worldwide.

The First Attempt

At the time, most domain extensions were three letters long—.com, .org, .biz, and others. Following that convention, I filed for our brands trademark “.LES,” the short version of .LESS, with the USPTO in 2011. The trademark was officially issued in January 2012.

That same year, 2012, ICANN opened the last major expansion of the internet’s domain system.

I worked relentlessly to prepare an application.

The challenge was significant. The application fee alone in 2012 was $185,000, and when combined with required reserves, operating costs, and extensive legal, technical, and financial preparation, the barrier to entry was substantial.

At 32 years old, without venture capital connections or institutional backing, raising that level of funding within the short 90-day application window proved extremely difficult.

Despite the odds, I completed the preparation and submitted my application as a placeholder and corresponded directly with ICANN. I believed the investment would come together.

It didn’t.

When the application window closed, I was deeply disappointed.  Years of relentless work had gone into building the foundation for the .LESS brand.

But there was one critical silver lining. Because the trademark had already been issued, no one else could claim the .LESS™ brand.

The Decision That Changed Everything

At that moment, I faced a defining choice: walk away from the vision—or keep building until the world was ready.

I chose to keep building.

Fourteen Years of quite development

With the window closed in 2012, I dedicated the next fourteen years to quietly and persistently shaping the .LESS™ brand and vision.

Because just like in real estate it’s location, location, location — on the internet, it’s domain name, domain name, domain name.

That work included:

• writing source code
• filing intellectual-property protections
• registering copyrights with the U.S. Copyright Office
• developing platform architecture
• expanding the domain ecosystem concept
• attending ICANN meetings and domain industry conferences
• registering additional trademarks
• building strategic relationships with technology companies
• building .LESS™ products and services

and more...

Along the way I met many remarkable engineers, domain industry veterans, and forward-thinking entrepreneurs who encouraged me to keep pushing the vision forward.

During this period I also began exploring how artificial intelligence would transform internet discovery and digital commerce. It became clear that AI-driven search, automated incentives, and intelligent payments would fundamentally reshape how users interact with the web. The .LESS™ ecosystem was designed with this future in mind — a platform where AI helps users find the best deals, the best services, and the most trustworthy websites instantly.

Why the Timing Is Perfect Now in 2026, ICANN is opening the next global expansion of the internet’s domain system — the first major opportunity since 2012!

.LESS™ is ready: a real, ICANN-approved top-level domain powered by proprietary source code, modern AI systems, intelligent commerce, and secure payment infrastructure (including our own PAY.LESS™ platform).

The next generation of premium digital real estate is still available—secure category ownership across trillion-dollar industries with domains like Insurance.LESS™, Cars.LESS™, Crypto.LESS™, AI.LESS™, Homes.LESS™, RX.LESS™, Travel.LESS™, and Tickets.LESS™, plus tens of thousands of additional high-value opportunities.

This isn’t just a domain extension—it’s a reinvention of the internet: cleaner, smarter, and enhanced by AI. Built over sixteen years of hands-on development, source code writing, patent applications, and platform architecture.

Now, everything aligns.

.Less™ is ready to launch—and I’m looking for visionary partners who understand the magnitude of what’s coming.

The 2026 ICANN window is open for a short time—and it will close quickly.
Opportunities like this come once a decade.
